Jammu. Jammu witnessed a near total shutdown Monday following the opposition call for a nationwide stir against rising fuel prices.

The strike in Jammu was marked by rallies and processions. Shops and business establishments were closed and public transport too remained off the roads.

"It's shocking that the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government is oblivious to the plight of the common people and still claims that it is working for the 'aam adami' (common man)," said Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Ashok Khajuria.

The shutdown call also evoked partial to near total response in Udhampur, Reasi, Kathua and Samba districts of Jammu region.

The inter-district bus services remained suspended.

However, vehicles carrying pilgrims to Vaishno Devi and Amarnath shrines were allowed to ply without any trouble.
