Swasthya Samiksha App to monitor real time maternal and reproductive healthcare indicators for Members of Bihar Vidhan Sabha


Patna, February, 2017: A woman dies every 12 minutes somewhere in India due to preventable causes that arises during pregnancy and childbirth. Quality of maternal health care is still a distant dream for many vulnerable and difficult to reach woman. In Bihar, the maternal mortality ratio has come down from 261 in 2009 to 219 in 2012 (SRS 2012) – but there is a long way to go before it meets the national MMR of 167. Peoples’ representatives can play a very critical role in monitoring services that are meant for these women. In order to provide Members of Vidhan Sabha up to date information on maternal and reproductive health,  Shri Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, honourable Speaker, Bihar Vidhan Sabha today launched the first of its kind android based app for mobile phones, Swasthya Samiksha developed by Centre for Catalyzing Change (C3) and Swaniti .

Swasthya Samiksha app is a monitoring and vigilance tool for the MLAs to track their respective constituency’s reproductive, maternal, neo natal and child health related data and indicators. They can also compare their constituency with other constituencies. Swasthya Samiksha aims to engage and encourage the MLAs to take necessary steps to ensure accessible and good quality health services for the women and children in their constituencies.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Aparajita Gogoi, Executive Director, of Centre for Catalyzing Change said, “”Swasthya Samiksha aims to engage and encourage the Members of the Legislative Assembly to take necessary steps to ensure better health for women in their constituencies. It is an attempt to provide data on health indicators in an easy and convenient way”.


The Swasthya Samiksha App can be downloaded free from Google Play Store and is available in Hindi and in English and is customised for every MLA with their unique log-in id. Upon successful selection of district, the page will show the name of district, health parameters and health indicators. Through a dropdown list the different parameters and indicators related to healthcare & service delivery can be selected. The data visualization through graphs and maps is user friendly with coloured bands for easier deduction of the extent of the problem.

Introducing the app, Speaker, Bihar Vidhan Sabha, Shri Vijay Kumar Choudhury said that this app will enable real time tracking of maternal health indicators for geographies at district level, selectable display of indicators, data with important events to assess impact, maternal health policy updates, accessing comparison with other geographies and state/ national averages”.

These parameters will help the MLAs identify the level of intervention required in terms of raising issues in the floor of the house, tracking implementation of programmes and overall goals for maternal an reproductive health and activating district level monitoring bodies under their leadership.

Some other features of the App also include newsfeed on issues pertaining to maternal and child health, geography specific news and relevant policy updates from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Cabinet.
